School Improvement Programme
In 2011, Dr. Reddy's partnered with Dr. Reddy's Foundation (DRF) to implement the
School Improvement Programme (SIP). SIP uses a three-pronged strategy,
complementing the government's efforts towards providing continuous quality education.

The SIP Model

With education as the prime focus area of the project, DRF identified potential stakeholders. An MoU was signed with the District Education Office for enabling SIP. Starting in 2011, SIP was initiated in 27 government schools surrounding Dr. Reddy's manufacturing units in five districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana - Ranga Reddy, Medak, Nalgonda, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram & Srikakulam.   In 2006, DRF partnered with 54 government primary schools, covering 12,000 students, in Balanagar Mandal, R. R. District to implement the Learning Guarantee Programme, in order to ensure that the students achieve basic competencies. This programme was successful and based on this experience, SIP was initiated to further enhance the quality of education in public schools with the involvement of community stakeholders.

Remedial Support
Remedial facilitation helps identify slow learners, works on their areas of difficulty and guides them to overcome their limitations. Under SIP, remedial coaching is conducted for Math and English, for students from Grade 3 to 10. Currently, coaching is provided to 10,000 students by 240 teaching volunteers. Additionally, as per the syllabus norms of state government, DRF - Education Resource Centre develops and supplies remedial work books to students, to aid learning.
School Sanitation
Despite a significant prioritisation and investment in improving the condition and usage of toilets in schools, the status of sanitation remains a matter of concern. To address this, SIP has engaged 52 sanitation volunteers who are responsible for maintenance of the toilets.

Scholarships
Dr. Reddy's scholarship for meritorious students is a one-time cash award, granted for students who obtain merit marks in the SSC examinations and Jr. Intermediate.
Provision for
Drinking Water
To address the need for safe drinking water, RO filtration systems have been installed in SIP schools. The filtration plants are maintained by Community Pure Water (CPW).

Study Lights
As frequent power cuts disturb evening studies, solar study lights were given to students appearing for the SSC board examinations on a refundable basis. Till date, 6,000 solar study lights have been distributed.
Sports & Talents
A cultural coordinator is engaged in SIP schools to train students in singing, sports and dancing.

Computer Skills
Access to computers and the internet has become an important academic need for high school students. Though computer labs are available in some government schools, they are not functional as there is no dedicated faculty. Under SIP, computer labs have been set up in 18 schools. Computer instructors have also been appointed in each of these schools.
Library Programme
With the aim of nourishing the young minds with knowledge and skills, SIP has set up libraries in 25 schools. Through innovative activities, workshops and storytelling, library volunteers build interest among students. SIP provides books, newspapers and children's magazines in all 25 schools.

At the beginning of the new academic year, a door-to-door campaign is done in coordination with district education authorities to ensure enrolment of all children.
Village heads and local Gram Panchayat leaders are engaged, who take the responsibility to ensure the children's presence in school.
Additionally, local community-based organisations and youth associations help mobilise people and create awareness on the importance of education.

Washrooms were constructed for girl students.
Career guidance programmes were conducted to spread awareness on sustainable earning sources for the girls who complete their SSC.
Assistance was provided to the needy to continue their higher education through Dr. Reddy's scholarship grants.

Decrease in School Dropouts

Under SIP, libraries are equipped with books; a reading volunteer is appointed; the librarian and volunteers are trained in storytelling, art and role play. They facilitate selection of the right book, book reading and learning through reading, in a student-friendly manner.
In the reporting year, B. Keerthi, a 9-year-old student of an SIP school at Pydibhimavaram, was awarded the Bala Katha Puraskaram. Conferred by 'Bala Bata', a children's monthly magazine, the award carries a scholarship of ₹1 lac in order to facilitate her studies after the SSC.

Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS), Bachupally won three prizes in the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan (RGKA) organised at Quthbullapur Mandal of Ranga Reddy district. ZPHS does not have an adequate playground. However, under SIP, a sports coordinator has been provided to the school. The coordinator ensures that students get an opportunity to practice even in that inadequate area.
